When Permanent Makeup Goes Wrong

When you are having your permanent makeup done you would hope that the permanent makeup artist doing it is qualified and experienced, however not all practitioners are equal. There are many out there that are not giving the quality of service that you would rightly expect. Choosing the wrong permanent makeup artist for your tattooed eyebrows, eyeliner, lips or any other cosmetic tattoo could be disastrous.

With that being said it is also important to note that not all permanent makeup disasters are due to the fault of the practitioner. Some clients fail to keep to the necessary aftercare routine that is vital for ensuring the best results.

What is permanent makeup?

Permanent eyebrows, eyeliner or lips can give you a made-up look straight out of bed, which is appealing to many people and has been growing rapidly in popularity over recent years. Eyeliner that never smudges, eyebrows that always have the perfect shape and lip pigmentation can save money on makeup we use everyday.

Cosmetic tattoos are not the same as traditional tattoos. semi permanent inks are used in cosmetic tattooing which are non-allergenic, and the pigment sits higher in the skins layers which creates a much more natural looking result. Cosmetic tattoos fade slowly over time but don’t discolour as regular tattoos do.

The risks of permanent makeup

Permanent makeup that has been applied well shouldn’t look any different to regular makeup, a great permanent makeup artist will work hard to ensure your cosmetic tattoo looks natural. However, we have all seen situations where the results of semi-permanent tattoos have gone wrong. Here are some examples of what can happen:

The Permanent Makeup Artist has used the wrong pigment

Applying the wrong pigment can be disastrous. What are meant to be subtle brown brows can become big black slugs!

Poor styling

There is no ‘out of the box’ solution for permanent makeup. Every cosmetic tattoo should be tailored to the clients individual’s needs, however, that being said some practitioners work with stencils and copy and paste styles. If you see this, avoid these practitioners. Approaching permanent makeup with a stencil or repeatable templates will not end with good results.

Allergies

Tattoo pigment is injected into your skin and so any allergic reaction or sensitivity such as itching, redness or swelling will last for some time. Practitioners should use hypoallergenic inks and should test for sensitivity before starting a treatment.

Infections

All equipment, inks and environment must be kept extremely clean otherwise there is a risk of infection. Infections can cause the pigment to bleed into unwanted areas of the skin, spoiling the look of the tattoo and putting the client at risk.

Scarring

Allergic reactions, infections and poor aftercare can result in scarring and ruin the look of your permanent makeup. It can also make it difficult to tattoo it again in the future.

Early fading

Inks should retain their pigment for 1 - 3 years if you use good aftercare. However, if the semi-permanent makeup is not well looked after, there is a chance fading could occur earlier than it should. Use sunscreen, moisturiser (based on your skin type) and avoid exfoliation to help. Found out more information about good aftercare for permanent makeup based on your skin type.

If you have a permanent makeup disaster you could consider tattoo removal. Bear in mind that, tattoo removal is far more expensive than it is to have the cosmetic tattoo done in the first place. It also carries more risk of infection and scarring. This is why it’s so important to have your permanent makeup done well, by an experienced, well trained and professional permanent makeup artist.

How to avoid a disaster

This will help to avoid disappointing results:

  1. Do your research, look at testimonials, and get recommendations

  2. Check the permanent makeup artist is qualified, trained and experienced

  3. Listen to and follow the advice given to you regarding aftercare

A good practitioner with plenty of training and experience will be able to create a perfect treatment for you. Whether you are looking to have permanent eyebrows, tattoo eyeliner or lip pigmentation, the right practitioner will improve the look of your face. When done correctly, there should be very little to no pain during your treatment, and the end results should look beautiful.
